Before Your Tattoo Appointment

Preparing your body and skin properly helps your tattoo look better, heal faster, and makes your session more comfortable.

Rest and Hydration

Get a good night's sleep

Being well-rested helps you stay calm and handle discomfort better during your session

Sleep deprivation can make you more sensitive to pain

Drink plenty of water

Hydrate well in the 24 hours before your appointment

Well-hydrated skin is more pliable and accepts ink better, creating cleaner lines

Eat a substantial meal

Make sure to eat 1–2 hours before your session to maintain energy and blood sugar levels

Bring snacks and water for longer appointments to avoid feeling lightheaded

Bonus tip: Taking extra vitamin C supports skin health and healing

Prepare Your Skin

Moisturize leading up to your appointment

Use an alcohol-free lotion once or twice daily for the week before your session

Do not apply any creams, lotions, or oils on the day of your appointment

Handle shaving carefully

If you need to shave the area, do it at least 24–48 hours before your appointment

Protect from damage

Avoid cuts, scrapes, burns, and bruises on the area

Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning before your session

Skip harsh exfoliants or scrubs in the days leading up to your session

What to Avoid

No alcohol for at least 24 hours — Thins your blood, increases bleeding, and affects ink quality
No blood-thinning pain relievers — Aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen before your session (unless prescribed)
No sunburn or fresh tanning — Makes the process more painful and slows healing
No heavy caffeine or energy drinks — Makes you jittery and dehydrated

Wear the Right Clothing

Choose loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed

Remember you may be sitting or lying in the same position for hours—comfort is key

Wear something you don't mind getting stained with ink or ointment
